Jane Postlethwaite is a Northern Queer Female Comedian & Writer based in Manchester

Hello, it’s me. How you doing? Welcome to my website.

You’ll find me currently honing my material on the North West comedy scene and around the UK for my solo shows called “Terrible People” due for festivals in 2024. I also run my own night called “So Hilarious” in Manchester which showcases women and LGBTQ+ acts at Feel Good Club. My new podcast is called “Bats in the Attic”.

I’ve done many projects that I’m super proud of including my one woman character comedy shows for Brighton Fringe, Edinburgh Fringe and the Women in Comedy Festival. I’ve acted in comedy plays in the Brighton Fringe that led to a nomination for best comedy actress.

My comedy characters have also made me a Funny Women Award and Brighton Comedy Festival Squawker Award Finalist. Then not to brag further…but I will, my first ever solo character comedy show, 'Made in Cumbria' was nominated for two Brighton Fringe awards - the Latest Comedy Award and for the Audience Choice Award.

I’ve done comedy characters, sketches and stand up comedy. You can peruse my past shows and body of work by looking on the Comedy Archive page of this website.

During lockdown I even took to TikTok with various ridiculous comedy characters and 1 minute sketches. Anything to try and stay slightly sane during a pandemic. In 2022 I got shortlisted for the Funny Women and Heat magazine Content Creator Award.

I’ve been heard on the BBC Radio 4 comedy drama, 'Almost like being in love' written by Catriona Knox and produced by Caroline Raphael. One of my comedy characters was featured on the Jo Neary BBC Radio 4 show called ‘Inbox’. In July 2018 I was selected for the BBC New Comedy award heats where my stand up comedy was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 from the Comedy Store in Manchester.

If you want to learn comedy with me I run comedy workshops online at https://so-hilarious.myshopify.com/collections/write-some-comedy-comedy-workshops

I started Character Building Productions in 2019 which works to support and create work with fellow women in comedy. One the projects is the ‘Character Building’ a series of character monologues, animations and radio play sketches. The funds for series one were crowdfunded to give opportunity to 24 women to take part by paying for training, equipment, travel, lunch and venue hire. This can be listened to on Spotify, Google Podcast and Anchor.

I’m currently working on my new stand up material, producing a new podcast, writing a short film, submitting scripts for TV and radio, and just generally chipping away at a comedy career I can be proud of.

(For Casting Directors and Agents) My dream roles would be:

  • A role in an Agatha Christie episode - love this era and wearing red lipstick

  • A Netflix Comedy Series - Something where I can be the dry dark northerner I am. (Would also accept Amazon Prime)

  • Be the voice of a character in an animated comedy film - Again, something where I can be a dry dark northerner…

  • Have a Radio 4 Comedy Show with lots of characters who are terrible people

  • Something where I’m in Space… and be a dry dark….you get the picture. NORTHERN! Need more Northerners in space.

  • A body in Silent Witness - Maybe found in a field of sunflowers?… in the North?

I also do other things - In 2021 I set up So Hilarious, an ethical and eco friendly t’shirt and apparel company which has designs for people in the arts, Feminists and the LBGTQ+ Community. Why? Just because I could. The brand also helps young people and women in need by supplying period supplies, toiletries and donations to charities.

For 2023, I’m running a new comedy night for female, non-binary and LGBTQI+ acts in Manchester at the Feel Good Club. You can get details of this at https://so-hilarious.myshopify.com/pages/so-hilarious-comedy-night
